Music

Music is an integral part of worship at Balmoral Presbyterian Church.

The sanctuary choir supports the worship service with a variety of anthems, from the eighteenth century European masterpieces to the rhythms and lyrics of contemporary Christian music. A recent highlight of the choir was its tour of England and Scotland, including performances at several churches. In addition to the sanctuary choir, Balmoral has two other choirs. Our Cherub Choir involves children ages three through five years of age in learning to praise God with music. During a fifteen minute period each Sunday, these children enjoy music with song, movement, simple percussive instruments (such as rhythm sticks and hand drums), and other props (such as scarves and flags). Their music is age appropriate and easily within the children’s vocal range.

For many of these children, this is their first choir experience. Every effort is made to make each child comfortable with the selected music and to enjoy being part of the choir. Most importantly, they learn that they too can make a valuable contribution to the worship experience on Sunday mornings.

Four or five times, from September through May, the Cherub Choir participates in the worship service by singing, usually to the accompaniment of a guitar. Often, the Cherub Choir will join the Children’s Choir for special music during Sunday morning worship.

The Children’s Choir members are in grades 1-5 and meet every Sunday morning after Church School for twenty minutes. They explore and celebrate Christian music through instruments, movement, and song. The Children’s Choir actively participates in Balmoral’s worship services throughout the year.

In 2005/2006, the Children’s Choir sang at the dedication of the Habitat for Humanity houses in downtown Memphis, lit the Advent wreath, and created original bulletin artwork. In addition, the choir gets together for fun celebrations.
